Expo Hightex welcomes Dr. Jean-Pierre Giroud to an international forum on geosynthetics

Monday 21 September 2009

Press release: Expo Hightex welcomes Dr. Jean-Pierre Giroud to an international forum on geosynthetics
For immediate release
21 September 2009

MONTRÉAL – Dr. Jean-Pierre Giroud, a key figure in the development of the geosynthetics, and notably geotextiles, industry, will attend Expo Hightex on Tuesday, October 8, 2009, at Montréal’s Bonsecours Market. In the morning, Dr. Giroud will explain the innovation processes responsible for creating this market segment, along with the mechanisms the textile industry has developed to meet the needs of civil engineering, and in the afternoon of the same day, he will speak on geosynthetics’ applications in road construction. Geosynthetics today generate billions of dollars annually and offer new possibilities for development, particularly in the textile industry.

Dr. Giroud’s activities are an important part of a day of seminars dedicated to geosynthetics. Expo Hightex will welcome various local and international experts from the private and public sectors who will address such topics as approval and regulations for geosynthetic products, and the commercial opportunities the latter offer.

Dr. Jean-Pierre Giroud, ECP engineer, Doctor of Science, Doctor Honoris Causa from the Technical University of Bucharest, member of the National Academy of Engineering (USA), and one-time professor of geotechnics, is a consulting engineer in the U.S., and honorary president and founder of Geosyntec Consultants, a major engineering consulting firm. Dr. Giroud is the president of the editorial committee of Geosynthetics International, and past president of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS). He also carried out two mandates as president of the technical committee on geosynthetics in the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). In 1977, he became the first person to use the terms “geotextile” and “geomembrane.” He has also authored 360 publications.

The geosynthetics forum is a unique opportunity to discover this promising field, on both a technological level and a commercial one. For more information, please visit http://www.expohightex.com.

Expo Hightex : A New World for Textile Industry (Canadian Space Agency)

Wednesday 16 September 2009

Press Release : Expo Hightex : A New World for Textile Industry

For immediate release - 16 September 2009
MONTRÉAL – Dr. Nicole Buckley, Director of Life and Physical Sciences at the Canadian Space Agency, sees many opportunities for the textile industry… in

space! Dr. Buckley will be presenting a seminar entitled “A New niche for Canadian textiles—in space!” at Expo Hightex (Montréal) on 8 October 2009. She will outline various ways that Canadian textiles could—and should—get involved in the Canadian Space Program, with a particular focus such as radiation protection and mitigation of the negative effects of spaceflight where we help is needed now.

Technological areas where textiles are already applied, such as crystallized cellulose, could offer new solutions. Indeed, few people are aware of the technical challenges in space that textiles can overcome, for example, clothing contributes significantly to a spacecraft’s mass. But that’s just the beginning – an astronaut loses bone mass ten times faster than a person suffering with osteoporosis, and this is another area where Canadian intelligent textiles can play a role through new technologies.

Canada’s links with NASA and the other International Space Station’s participating countries may also open further opportunities to involve our high-tech textiles in global space programmes. Above and beyond the benefits of pushing the industry’s technical capacities to the hilt, in terms of marketing this key business cluster also stands to benefit.

Dr. Buckley joined the Canadian Space Agency in 2000, and has held various positions in the field of Space Life Sciences, including her current position, in which she leads Canadian scientific research on the International Space Station in the fields of Space Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. She was awarded a degree in Oral Biology (the University of Manitoba) and has pursued postdoctoral studies in molecular biology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and the Université Laval.

Come to Expo Hightex at Bonsecours Market, 7-8 October 2009, and increase your knowledge of how the pursuit of the final frontier can boost local industry in unexpected ways.

MONTREAL - PROTEC-STYLE Lingerie is introducing the Marilyn panty at Expo
Hightex (7-8 Oct 2009 in Montreal), a revolutionary panty with a special lining that
keeps you dry while protecting clothing from stains. Comfortable, classically elegant,
the Marilyn panty features the latest technology. The hypoallergenic and absorbent

The collection’s first model bears the name Marilyn in honour of the legendary photo
of Marilyn Monroe, whose dress, over a subway grating in New York, blows upward
to reveal her white panties. After 50 years of textile evolution, women of all ages will
love the Marilyn panty experience. The confidences they’ve shared attest to the need
